About Us

The Huntsville Herb Society is a volunteer-based organization in partnership with the Huntsville Botanical Garden.  The Herb Garden contains a Knot Garden and thirteen specialty gardens staffed with a chairperson and support personnel.

In April 1984 twenty-four people with a common interest in herbs, met to charter the Huntsville Herb Society.  Mrs. Faye Simmons was responsible for organizing the meeting and was later chosen as the first president.  In 1985 the membership voted to become a member of the Huntsville Botanical Garden, which was under development.  The Huntsville Herb Garden site at the Huntsville Botanical Garden was selected and staked on September 26, 1986.  In 1987, the Herb Society planted our first garden at the site.  The first raised beds were made using railroad ties; the pergola, bricked beds, and cottages were added later as funds became available.  Through fund-raising efforts such as our Herb Fairs and the hard work and dedication of our members, the Huntsville Herb Society Garden has developed into one of the most outstanding features of the Huntsville Botanical Garden.

The Huntsville Herb Society adopted the herb watercress as its official seal and emblem in recognition of Huntsville's former title of "Watercress Capital of the World".  The associated colors are green, gold, and blue.
